Four communities in the west metro area are taking action to reduce energy use and increase investment in renewable energy. Eden Prairie, Edina, St. Louis Park and Bloomington are working with Xcel Energy's Partners in Energy to develop and implement energy action plans that decrease energy-related carbon emissions. BOMA Greater Minneapolis chapter members are key partners in this effort.

Partners in Energy is an Xcel Energy offering that supports communities in the development and implementation of cutomized, community-driven energy action plans. A total of 15 Minnesota communities have participated in Partners in Energy to date, as well as 13 communities in Colorado. Each participating community convenes an Energy Action Team comprised of a variety of stakeholders, including representatives from the business community. Over a series of workshops, the Energy Action teams analyze community energy data, select priority areas of focus, establish objectives and develop strategies for achieving them.

St. Louis Park, Edina and Eden Prairie have all set goals that specifically target large commercial buildings in their respective communities. All three communities seek to reduce energy use, increase use of renewable energy and decrease greenhouse gas emissions by driving participation in conservation and renewable subscription programs offered by Xcel Energy. To accomplish this goal, all three communities seek to engage large commercial building owners and managers to provide targeted information and decision-making support.

Eden Prairie's Mayor and Economic Development Manager are speaking with business leaders and energy efficiency during business meet & greets. A new internship at the City of Eden Prairie will focus on outreach and follow-up to support businesses in taking action. Edina is hosting a workshop for Centennial Lakes tenants to engage them in energy conservation through a behavior change campaign. St. Louis Park is developing case studies of business leaders taking action, with the hopes that this will help motivate peers.

Energy Action team members include Park Nicollet, Hardcoat Inc., Knutson Construction, Nordic Ware (St. Louis Park), the Chamber of Commerce (Edina), Eden Prairie Center, MTS Systems Corporation (Eden Prairie), the Mall of America, the Donaldson Company, Health Partners, OATI, and Quality Bike Products (Bloomington). These members joined City staff, commission members, school district representatives and residents to help develop energy action plans and contribute to plan implementation.

BOMA Greater Minneapolis, local Chambers of Commerce and other industry groups are key partners in this effort. Xcel Energy and City representatives will collaborate with these groups to share information about energy conservation and renewable energy opportunities, including co-hosting meetings and workshops that support action and facilitate peer sharing. BOMA members are encouraged to reach out their city representatives to learn more.
