Every two seconds, someone in America needs blood. As the single largest supplier of blood in the U.S., the American Red Cross works tirelessly to ensure that lifesaving blood and blood products are available to patients in need. Each day, the Red Cross must collect 13,000 units of blood to meet the needs of accident and burn victims, surgical candidates and those receiving treatment for leukemia, cancer or sickle cell disease.

Blood donors can feel confident that by donating blood through the Red Cross that they are helping to ensure that blood products are available for patients in more than 108 hospitals throughout the North Central Blood Services Region in Minnesota, western Wisconsin, eastern South Dakota and northwestern Iowa, as well as about 2,600 hospitals across the country.

The Red Cross could not provide these services without the help of its generous volunteer blood donors and those organizations that sponsor more than 200,000 blood drives each year. Their generous support helps the Red Cross provide a strong and robust blood supply.

Overall, the summer months are among the most challenging times of the year for blood donations as regular donors delay giving while they vacation and participate in summer activities.

How you can help
Nearly 80 percent of donations are collected at blood drives close to where people work and live. As the largest supplier of blood in the U.S. and with over 70 years of experience, the Red Cross makes hosting blood drives rewarding and easy.

Please consider hosting a Red Cross blood drive in your building this summer. The Red Cross will work closely with you and provide the tools to help organize a successful blood drive. It just takes a champion, executive support, space on your premises for the blood drive to be held, a few people willing to volunteer to organize the drive and recruit donors. Th Red Cross will do the rest. Please contact Karla Fenstermaker, Business Development Manager, at (612) 720-2991 or karla.kenstermaker@redcross.org for more information.

If you can't host a blood drive, you can still help by giving blood at a location that is convenient for you. Make an appointment to donate blood by downloading the free Red Cross Blood Donor App, visiting RedCrossBlood.org or calling 1-800 Red Cross (1-800-733-2767).

Help the Red Cross ensure blood is available for patients throughout the summer. New donors and those who haven't given in a while are especially encouraged to roll up a sleeve and help save lives. Do you know someone who has never donated before? Encourage them to make an appointment with you!
